Just checked my 61-year-old father into a nursing home. Saddest thing in the world.

The worst part is that he doesn’t understand that this isn’t temporary. He keeps saying he just needs exercise and that then he’ll follow through with plans to find a place in Seattle and live with his son (um, and what about his daughter?). Meanwhile, he has ostomy bags hanging from his abdomen and can scarcely get out of bed. He looks like a man on the brink of death – and he is. Twice this month, he has landed himself in the ICU due to his inability to take care of himself.

The place, at least, is much nicer than other homes I’d looked at, which smelled of death and feces. God, old age is undignified.
